Terra Tuesday: The Final Fit

Quick Facts

An update on how the Terra case is being created.

Our Mold Has Been Corrected

We talked a little bit about a weird recessed square that was placed, last minute, on our injection molded case model by the plastic case company. While the idea was with good intentions, the prevention of what they call "shrinkage", ultimately produced cosmetic compromises that we did not want with Terra. Unfortunately, this collided with Chinese New Year -- a well deserved holiday for our friends in China. Afterwards, they sent us the corrected file.

We used CTT's SLS 3D printer to print a revised version of the injection molded model. We also used CTT's Prusa 3D printer to create a copy of a slightly reduced size of our PCB. We repositioned our PCB standoffs for better fit.

Long story short: Everything fits and the case looks beautiful!

Our injection molding company was instructed today to go to full production, taking in account a matte forest green color, which should reduce the "stretch marks" on our case. To be honest with everyone, they are hard to see as it is on a gloss case. And at the end of the day, we want Terra to do three simple things: listen to our backyard, identify birds, and receive wildlife radio tags. While it should look pretty doing so, if you see a fraction of a millimeter bump around the Terra, these are the "stretch marks" we are trying to mitigate.

I hope everyone has a great week and looking forward to the next Terra Tuesday.

The first Terra!

The first Terra!

It's been almost 3 years since Terra began, and we've finally produced one.  We got our first 20 Terra PCB boards for testing, as well as all the parts we needed.  We ran them all through our giant easy bake oven, and out came a complete Terra. Next step is to test the board and then run 20 more, which will go into the 20 enclosures we received.  Those all get tested for a couple of weeks, and then we start making Terras.  Here's Mike with the finished board... And Scott thinking of all the birds we'll identify! Needless to say we're thrilled to be at this point, and it means we're getting very close to fulfilling your orders as...
Terra Tuesday: Windscreens ahoy!

Terra Tuesday: Windscreens ahoy!

We've been working on getting together all the parts and accessories for shipping, and it's all coming together. Two big rolls of material are going to a sewing contractor to make 4000 windscreens (!) that will go into each end of the devices. We also are expecting a small but very heavy shipment of magnets, which will connect the Terra to it's support without compromising the integrity of the housing. Last but not least, the final enclosures are being worked up, and we can't wait to put it all together!
